The Mt. Hope girls volleyball team came from behind to beat Middletown 3-1(19-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-12) on Thursday night. The Huskies are currently in third place in Division II with a record of 5-1. Their lone loss came against 6-0 East Providence who are currently in first place.
“ This was a huge win for us. An amazing game all the way around,” said head coach Lisa Lunney. “The girls just got into a rhythm and played scrappy. It was such an incredible team effort.”
Huskies senior captain Mia Shaw is the team’s floor general on and off the court. The four year starter is the whole package for the Huskies. She is a terrific leader for the younger players and is a strong all around player with a great work ethic, according to Coach Lunney. As the team’s setter, she has 121 assists this season. She leads the team in service aces with 18 and serves made with 92. Shaw has amassed 59 digs in the six games and has racked up 15 kills and 3 blocks. She tallied 21 assists, 13 digs and 3 kills against Middletown.
“Mia is our rock and even though she is our setter, she could play any position on the court,” said Coach Lunney. “She always gives 100 percent and is our floor general with an over the top, volleyball IQ. I ask her daily to rethink the graduation thing and stay with us.”
Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Wilcox recorded 6 kills, 14 digs and 4 aces during the Middletown game. Gianna Lunney had 6 kills and 6 aces and Grace Gerhard had 6 kills and 2 aces.
“There are some out there that thought this match was an upset,” Coach Lunney said. “Tonight we stayed with the game plan and executed. I am so proud of them. We’ve got a lot of season left. We still have some work to do.”
