Ward L. Sears, 75, of Bristol, died Sunday Oct. 23, 2016, at home. He was the husband of the late Jennie (Castigliego) Sears. Ward was born in Springfield, Mass., a son of the late Ward A. and Noreen ( Morgan) Sears.
Mr. Sears was a civil engineer for Stone and Wagner for many years, and also for Burns and Roe. He was a licensed and certified engineer. Mr. Sears was a captain in the US Army, serving as a unit commander, in the construction engineers division, while serving in Vietnam.
While in the service, he received the Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, National Defense Service Medal, 2 overseas bars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device 1960, a Unit Commendation Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters.
He was an undergraduate of Northeastern University with degree in engineering, and a graduate of Syracuse University with an MBA. Mr. Sears had attended Northeastern University on an Athletic Scholarship, for basketball, was a captain on their team and is in the Hall of Fame at the university.
Mr. Sears was a kind hearted person and a jack of all trades, and loved caring for his late wife, and also loved sports. He was always helping others, whether it was remodeling, or driving someone someplace. He liked photography, playing cards and spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Mr. Sears is survived by his daughters, Nicola Uzell and her husband William of Shrewsbury, Mass., and Shelley and her husband Daniel D’Amato of Tolland Conn. He was the brother of Nancy June Royce and her husband, Richard, of Ludlow Mass.; and brother-in-law of Jessica Garakop and her husband John of Warren RI. He was the grandfather of Amanda Uzell, Brandon Uzell, Dillon D’Amato and Aidan D’Amato. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
His funeral service will be held Monday, Oct. 31, 2016 at 10 a.m. in the Smith Funeral and Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, RI. Burial with military honors will follow in the North Burial Ground, Hope Street, Bristol. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours are Sunday, Oct. 30, 2016, 2-5 p.m.
