The Bristol ‘fuzz’ get fuzzy for a good cause

This month, the Bristol Police Department has been participating in the Home Base No Shave campaign, raising $2,625 (to date) for veterans and their families — currently the third-highest total among all Rhode Island police departments.

The Home Base No Shave campaign was founded and championed by MBTA transit Police and Boston Gang Unit Detective Kurt Power. The veteran and Purple Heart recipient wanted a way to raise funds for the Home Base, the organization that helped him. Run by Mass General Hospital through the Boston Red Sox, Home Base provides life-saving care to veterans trying to heal from the invisible wounds of war, like post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury.

All 26 Bristol participants, including both officers and civilian employees of the department, pledged at least $100 to the cause.

According to Sgt. Brian Morse, who coordinated Bristol’s participation, Chief Kevin Lynch suspended the usual police grooming standard for the duration of the month of November.

“Normally we have to be clean-shaven,” said Sgt. Morse. “This is the first time I’ve gone without shaving in 15 years.”

There will be a shave-off at Fenway Park on Dec. 4, which some of the Bristol participants may be attending.

People can still donate to Bristol Police Department’s page at homebase.org/noshave.
