SPRINGFIELD, MASS. — Karli Opalka, a sophomore center on the Roger Williams University women’s basketball team, was chosen as the Commonwealth Coast Conference’s player of the week for the second time this season.
Opalka, of Southbury, Conn., started off 2020 with a pair of double-doubles for Roger Williams at the Hampton Inn/West Springfield Naismith Classic. Her effort earned her a spot on the All-Tournament Team. She began the classic with 20 points and 11 rebounds in a 62-50 victory over Saint Joseph’s (Maine). She shot 75 percent (9-for-12) from the field and had one takeaway. She then scored 27 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in a narrow, 66-63, loss to Springfield. Overall Opalka averaged 23.5 points and 14.0 rebounds and shot 62.9 percent (22-for-35) from the floor.
Opalka was also chosen CCC women’s basketball player of the week for the third week of the 2019-20 season back in late November. Then, she had a double-double in two RWU contests. She opened with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and two assists in an 83-63 loss to Brandeis. She followed that up with 13 points, 10 rebounds, one assist, and one steal in a 62-58 victory over Connecticut College.
