Rose Pires, 95, passed away on April 21, 2021, at the HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center. She was the loving wife of Edmund A. Pires for 67 years prior to his death in 2011.

Born in Taunton, Mass., Rose was the daughter of the late Frank and Emilia Santos. Rose attended Central Falls High School and later graduated from the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School.

Rose was employed at Sears Roebuck in Providence for a number of years and then served as office manager and co-owner of Central Braid and Rug Co. in Central Falls for 15 years.

Rose most enjoyed spending time with her family and was also an avid sports fan, never missing a game of her beloved Patriots. She will be remembered for her beauty and style, but most for her fierce devotion to her family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Marsha Armitage Bristow of Sausalito, Calif.; her son, Edmund A. Pires Jr., and his wife Colleen King of Bristol, R.I.; granddaughters, Cortney Armitage of Pasadena, Calif., and Caroline Day and her husband Samson of Los Angeles, Calif., as well as many nieces and nephews. Rose was preceded in death by her brother, Anthony Santos.

Services will be private at the family’s request.

Donations in Rose’s honor can be sent to the HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center.

Arrangements are with the George Lima Funeral Home. www.limafh.com

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
