Mario DaCosta Medina, 80, Bristol

Mario DaCosta Medina, 80, of Wood Street, Bristol, passed away on Feb. 1, 2022, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Maria de Jesus (Avelar) Medina.

Born in Sta. Cruz, Flores, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Antonio Sousa Medina and Lurdes (da Costa) Medina. He was the father of Lucia Costa and the late Thelma Rodrigues; grandfather of Cieria Costa, Marisa Rodrigues and Derek Rodrigues and great grandfather of Everly Thel Rodrigues. He was the brother of Saul Medina, Ernesto Medina, Jorge Medina, Salme Mateus and Luis Medina. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews in Portugal and Canada.

Mr. Medina was employed by Pearson Yachts before retiring.
Funeral services were held Feb. 5 from the George Lima Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Elizabeth’s Church. Liturgical readings were by Trimnda Castro and Marisa Rodrigues, who also read the Prayer of the Faithful. The offertory gifts were presented by Derek Rodrigues and Cieria Costa. Burial followed in North Burial Ground. Serving as pallbearers were Derek Rodrigues, Alex Verrecchia, Elisio Castro, Roy Guedes, Stephen Verrecchia and Andre Quintellia.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
