Letter: Why spread misinformation and negativity?

Posted

To the editor:

There were three very interesting and connected pieces in last week’s Phoenix. Letters to the editor from Bill Bullard and Michael Byrnes, and a piece about White Nationalist fliers in downtown Bristol.

Mike Byrnes continues to spread misinformation about the Black community or its history or needs. “The egregious lies of police murdering blacks on American streets”? Surely you have heard of George Floyd, or maybe seen the video of him slowly dying with a cop’s knee on his neck, and there have been 229 black souls killed by police since then, ranging in age from three months to 88. It is the American perception that a black man, especially, is threatening, and police carry guns, so they shoot to kill, in some cases with over 30 bullets into one body. It often starts with a traffic stop then escalates to another murder. Please do your research Michael.

I agree with Bill Bullard. Why do the folks of the BCCC feel like they do? Why are they so focused on matters that they do not experience or know much about? And why the crushing need to misinform the community? Along with the White Nationalist fliers that are being put up in Bristol, why the focus on the Black community? And you mention the Black-on-Black killings, but the stats are similar for white-on-white killings, so there’s nothing there. You have no idea what it is like to have a family member, dad, son, brother, or sister, killed by those people who are supposed to protect our communities. Why the constant negativity and lies?
