Letter: Volunteers step up to honor fallen veteran

To the editor,

The Bristol Veterans Council helps veterans and their families in all different ways. Steve Skuba had an idea for a memorial for P. Andrew McKenna, and BVC President Joseph Diniz got us permission from our Town Council and Parks & Recreation Department to get it done.

It began with Tony Ramos, of Granite of America, a Bristol native, who donated a beautiful black and gray monument. Right on his heels was an offer from Warren Monument to engrave it. Eagle Scout Andrew Borge and his team helped clear the site near the VFW, assisted by our post.

So during the rainy month of May, we struggled to finish and we got wet; really wet. The owner of American Tree fired up his chain saw, assisted by Bristol DPW and Ramos Excavating to finally make it a great front entrance. Davonte Landscaping stepped in shortly after to sod and wood chip the area.
And so the park began. As you drive on Hope Street between the VFW and the Perry House, you’ll see the fruits of that labor.

I certainly forget I didn’t forget anyone; if I did, I am sorry. I have lived here for 23 years and I’ll never get over all the volunteer hard work the folks in this town give.
