To the editor:

Bristolians are indeed fortunate to have residents like Pete Hewett, who exercises sound judgment in his Letter to the Editor (Sept. 2). His questions regarding the multi-million dollar expenditure for a new high school are worthy of consideration.

Unlike many who express personal opinions, Hewitt's are supported by valid statistics after astute study of the facts. He is not one who simply spouts off without careful analysis. In his letter he cites very specific data regarding bond issues, what amount is reimbursable, whether other schools will be included, who serves on the building committee, who has been hired as the project manager, if RIDE will contribute to the reimbursement, whether it is assured, and what impact the project will have on property taxes — all valid inquiries.

I doubt that there are many who take the time or interest to study issues so thoroughly in order to pose such legitimate concerns. You can always trust that his comments are not wild speculation, but rather the result of a perspicacious mind and keen awareness of pertinent matters.
