We are writing today to respectfully request that our colleagues on the Bristol Warren Regional School Committee reconsider their decision to hold the first day of class on the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah.

We understand the the committee has worked hard on the calendar to balance a number of competing priorities and the Rosh Hashanah conflict was spotted late in the process. Nevertheless, we urge the committee to revisit the issue and adopt a calendar that removes the conflict.

The first day of school is always an important day that has even more significance this year. For many, it will be the first in-person day of school in well over a year. It is unfair to ask Jewish children, teachers, and staff to choose between school and their faith.

Some have pointed out that Jews who choose to celebrate the holiday can skip that day of school with no repercussions. However, this misses the point. Every year, Jewish children feel their difference when Christmas and Good Friday come around. There is no need to subject them to yet another day that sets them apart from their classmates.

The request is to simply move the start date by one day to accommodate this unusual calendar conflict. We hope the committee reconsiders the decision.”
