Letter: Government creates false market on alternative energy

Posted

Editor’s note: This letter is in response to a Sept. 5, 2019 editorial, “No laughing matter,” regarding alternative energy.

To the editor:

If wind and solar are our “cheapest” sources of energy these days, it’s because state and federal governments have their fingers all over the scale.

The government creates a false market by mandating that National Grid purchase energy from alternative energy sources, then subsidizes the installation of wind and solar energy projects to meet the demand.

The jobs and “cheap” power the alternative energy industry generates aren’t free. They are the product of a massive government-run wealth transfer from the rest of us to those who can afford to cash in.

If you believe the promotion of alternative energy is the right thing to do for the planet and that it’s the government’s job to promote it at all cost, then say that. Statements like “alternative energy is booming” reflect either an ignorance of the economic forces at play or a deliberate attempt to obfuscate the issue.
