'Foster a Senior' program hopes for biggest year yet in Bristol

Posted

Launched eight years ago, the Foster a Senior program is back. Created by Donna Wilson, Director of the Bristol Senior Center, the program served 75 seniors in its first year, a little over 100 in its second, and 200 in its third. This year, Wilson hopes to be able to serve 300 seniors, the same number as in recent years.

“Seniors believe in Santa too,” said Wilson. “We remember our kids on Christmas, but it’s just as important to remember our seniors!”

Wilson gets names from housing, churches, friends and family, to help identify those who deserve a spot on her “nice” list.

With the reduction of COVID-era benefits, she is soliciting donations of gift cards to local grocery stores and pharmacies, as well as gas cards. Since Wilson also likes for everyone to get a little something to unwrap as well, simple items like robes, fluffy blankets, non-skid socks, gloves and hats, toiletries, art supplies, flashlights with batteries and boxes of chocolates are most welcome. Gift cards are best in $20-$25 denominations.

Wilson emphasizes that this is not a need-based effort — the goal is to make all seniors know that they are remembered at Christmas.

She is hoping to deliver the love and cheer the week of Dec. 18, so please drop off donations to the Bristol Senior Center, 1020 Hope St., as soon as possible. For more information, call 401-253-8458.
