Emilien G. Desmarais, 76, of Bristol

Emilien G. Desmarais, 76, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2019, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Judith F. (Durco) Desmarais for 25 years. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Emilien and Madeline (Surgento) Desmarais.

Emilien was employed as a mortgage broker for Eastside Financial for many years before retiring. He also worked as a car salesman for Norwood Chevrolet. He served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Emilien was a member of the Over the Hill Motorcycle Club in Warren for 40 years, and the former Senior Vice Commander of the Disabled Veterans Post #9. His name is also on a plaque at the VFW Post #237 in Bristol.

Emilien was the beloved father of David J. Desmarais, Scott C. Desmarais, and Jacob M. Desmarais; brother of Noel Desmarais, Laura Lamontagne, and Julie Lowe; grandfather of David, and Ashley, and great-grandfather of Lucas.

A chapel service with military honors will be held Monday, Dec. 23, 2019, at 11 a.m. in the RI Veterans’ Cemetery Chapel, South County Trail, Exeter. Please arrive at the cemetery parking area at 10:45 a.m. Visiting hours and flowers are respectfully omitted. A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
