Dozens of local hockey players took to the ice on Wednesday night to compete in the 15th annual John Paul Medeiros Jr. Memorial Cup hockey games.
The girls played first — the East Bay co-op team (which includes players from Barrington, Mt. Hope and Portsmouth high schools) defeated the Cumberland/Lincoln/ Mt. St. Charles co-op team 6-0.
In the second game of the double-header, Barrington's boy's team skated past Mt. Hope, 5-2.
The games are an on-going tribute to the late J.P. Medeiros Jr. through the scholarship fund set up for local student-athletes by his father, a retired coach and teacher at Barrington High School, and his mother, a retired nurse. They have been assisted by a number of family members, friends, and school officials throughout the years.
J.P. Medeiros was a two-sport star (hockey and golf) at Mt. Hope High School, where he graduated in 1999. He was a lifelong resident of Warren, who was killed in a car crash in April, 2002, while he was a junior at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.
The memorial hockey games serve as a fund-raiser for scholarships. In the past 15 years, 59 student-athletes have received awards from the scholarship fund. And while the game was played Jan. 4, donations will be accepted until May 1. For more information, email coachjp@cox.net
