Despite dwindling numbers, the Mighty Mighty Pack Six endures

Participation in Cub Scouts has fallen about 70%, but passionate volunteers are keeping the Pack alive

Last year, Bristol’s Cub Scout program, The Mighty Mighty Pack Six, had more than 80 active scouts. Now, the number of scouts has diminished to 24 due to the pandemic.

Despite this, Pack Six leaders are doing their best to sustain traditions and provide a safe and fun program for cub scouts. Recently, Pack Six had three cub scouts cross sover to Scout Troops.

The cub scout program is run entirely by volunteer parents. Jessica Silvia, treasurer and Arrow of Light Leader, said “Mighty Mighty Pack Six is a thriving pack thanks to our Scouts, parents, leaders, and community!”

Until a few weeks ago, the Cub Scouts held meetings outdoors on the town’s tennis courts at the town common across the street from St. Mary’s Church. For more than 60 years, the program has been chartered by St. Mary’s Church. Recently, with the arrival of seriously cold weather, scouts now utilize the St. Mary’s basement, and they found a second place to follow social distancing guidelines. Kenneth Machado, assistant cub master and Arrow of Light den leader, said “Shout out to Bristol Train of Artillery for their partnership through the years and providing us a second meeting place so we can continue to meet in person.”

During these unprecedented times, the program is finding new ways to follow social distancing guidelines. Pack Six offers cub scouts the option to participate in activities and meetings over Zoom or at home with a parent. On March 27, Pack Six is hosting a virtual Pinewood Derby competition; the famous event is taking a unique approach this year to maintain tradition and overall safety for its members.

As the warm weather approaches, the scouts plan to utilize the outdoors; Suzanne Tabor, cub master and Bear Den leader, said: “Upcoming plans are to stay the course, providing a quality program within state and local guidelines, enjoying the outdoors and having fun!”

Pack Six gives back to Bristol’s community by conducting food drives and beach cleanups, and replacing veterans’ flags at St. Mary’s Cemetery. The program is always open to new ideas on how they can help the community. Learn more about Bristol’s Mighty Mighty Pack Six, contact info@packsix.com.
