Freshman Jessica Deal placed second and the Mt. Hope cross country team finished fourth during the RI Class Championships at Ponaganset’s covered bridge course on Saturday. The finish was good enough to qualify the Huskies to run at the state meet this weekend.
“I wasn’t expecting to do this well this season,” Deal said. “I just came out and ran as fast as I could.” The freshman crossed the finish line with a time of 19:12.5, 43 seconds behind winner Reese Fahys of East Greenwich. Deal who started running in middle school posted one of the school’s lowest times in her first crack at the covered bridge course. “We knew going in that there would be some tough competition,” said head coach Susan Rancourt. “Jess ran strong behind the reigning state champ, but had not bested her own personal record. We approached the meet as a learning experience. Next week she will be more prepared to face the state’s top contenders.”
The Huskies placed fourth behind East Greenwich, Barrington, and South Kingstown with a low score of 124 with an average time of 22:09.28.
Coach Rancourt was happy with the team’s results, “This performance was the team’s best yet and with the lowest point score in school history,” she said. “The girls will now have an additional opportunity for their personal goals on what will now be a familiar course and opponents.”
Results: Lucy O’Brien placed 27th for the Mt. Hope with a time of 21:58.8, Reyn Ferris placed 28th with a time of 22:25.2, Lily DaSilveira placed 33rd with a time of 23:08.8, Ryan Coffey placed 39th with a time of 24:01.1, Sonia Bradley placed 41st with a time of 24:24.1, and Analucia Romero placed 58th with a time of 28:04.2.
