Bristol named safest college town in nation

Posted

SafeWise, an independent review site that tracks national crime and safety trends, has named Bristol the safest college town in the U.S.

Their criteria are simple: FBI crime data. Bristol’s latest top-spot stats include a violent crime rate of 0.23 per 1000 residents, while property crime is at 3.17 per 1000.

According to their report, “….the terms ‘safest’ and ‘dangerous’ refer explicitly to crime rates as calculated from FBI crime data—no other characterization of any community is implied or intended.”

They also noted that the recognition was for the town, not the school; each school has its own set of safety and crime data that may or may not correlate with the surrounding town.

“This recognition of the town we call home speaks to the collaboration of the Town’s leadership, public safety departments, and Roger Williams University, working together to make safety and inclusion a top priority,” said Jill Rodrigues, RWU’s Director of Communications and Media Relations.

Crediting all the stakeholders working in concert with each other, Chief Kevin Lynch said, “I remain humbled by the support I receive from Town leadership including Town Administrator Steven Contente and elected officials, department heads, citizenry, and more importantly the rank-and-file officers and civilian support staff…As an RWU alumni and father of a recent college grad I take solace that families and RWU staff can have sense of safety and pride knowing that we truly value public safety and make a difference in the community.”
