PORTSMOUTH — For the Portsmouth High School soccer teams, Monday’s playoff games came down to the same nerve-racking test: penalty kicks.

But while the boys celebrated a dramatic shootout victory over Moses Brown, the girls endured the heartbreak of a season-ending loss to Barrington.

The boys defeated Moses Brown 2-1 (5-4 on penalty kicks) in a Division 1 preliminary playoff game in Providence on Monday afternoon.

Portsmouth striker Wyatt Woll scored in the first half off an assist from Anthony Pyliotis to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead. Moses Brown tied the game in the second half, sending the teams into two five-minute overtime periods before penalty kicks decided the outcome.

All five Patriots — Eoin Soler, Woll, Pyliotis, Will Ramos and Shane Rogers — converted their penalty kicks, while junior goalkeeper Gabriel Chytka made one save to secure the victory. Chytka, who made 10 saves in regulation and four more in overtime, was excited after the win.

“My aura alone made Alex Holland miss his (penalty kick) to send us into the next round of the playoffs,” he exclaimed. Holland missed the entire net, wide right.

Portsmouth advances to face La Salle in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
