The Barrington High School boys cross country team opened the dual meet season on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 22, with wins over LaSalle Academy and East Providence.

Barrington captured a narrow victory over perennial powerhouse LaSalle Academy, 26-30. (Low score wins.) 

Leading the charge for the Eagles was returning standout Colby Napolitano. He finished second overall with a time of 16.42.5 — just a half-second behind LaSalle’s Matt Lewis. 

Brooks Mello, a highly-touted newcomer to the team, finished second for Barrington and fourth overall with a time of 16:59. Ryan Hurlock powered to a fifth place finish with a time of 17:10. 

Barrington sophomores Calvin Mentzer and Brady Martin finished back-to-back in seventh and eighth places; Mentzer clocked a time of 17:19 and Martin was a few steps back at 17:24. 

Eagles’ freshman standout Finn Evans finished 10th with a time of 17:42. Patrick Coen crossed the line in 12th place at 18:00, and Austin McCarty was 14th at 18:15. 

Finn Sullivan rounded out the top-20 overall finishers. He finished 20th with a time of 18:38.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
