BHS students turn $100,000 investment into $124,766 in two months

A team of students from Barrington High School earned a first place rating and finished second in Rhode Island in the SIFMA Foundation’s “Stock Market Game.”

Students in Tammy McMichael's economics classes contributed to the first place rating earned by Barrington High School, and one of her teams placed second in the state in the high school division. There were more than 450 teams in Rhode Island; this was Barrington High School’s first time participating.

Ms. McMichael’s second-place team started with an initial investment of $100,000 and showed an increase of nearly 25 percent in two months time.

The Stock Market Game is an online academic and life-skills educational program used by hundreds of Rhode Island teachers to boost students’ math, economics, and personal finance knowledge. It also helps them improve their test scores and develop essential skills for financially independent futures.

Teams of students begin the simulation with an imaginary investment of $100,000 to trade stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and exchange-traded funds on the NYSE and NASDAQ. Students follow current events and global news impacting the financial markets and place trades in real-time.

The two top teams with the highest portfolio value receive awards in the elementary, middle and high school categories.

This year’s winners in Rhode Island:

• Elementary: 1. Henry Barnard/Providence Country Day School - $101,412.63; 2. Henry Barnard/Providence Country Day School - $100,248.13

• Middle school: 1. De La Salle Middle School - $109,287.80; 2. De La Salle Middle School - $104,830.24

• High school: 1. Smithfield High School - $126,828.97; 2. Barrington High School - $124,766.74
