Barrington High School organizing Ukraine relief dinner

Fund-raiser planned for Sunday, April 3 at the school; BMS donates items to refugees

Barrington High School will hold a special dinner on Sunday afternoon, April 3, from 1 to 4 p.m., to raise money for Ukraine refugees.

The school community has been involved in the relief effort — earlier this month, BHS teachers Suzanne and Steve Pickford organized a donation drive that yielded dozens of boxes shipped to Ukraine refugees. Now the school is stepping up again to help out — proceeds from the dinner will be donated to Unicef, which is helping with the relief effort.

Tickets for the dinner are $20 each and can be purchased at the high school during lunch periods.

“The Barrington High School Community has collectively decided that we cannot continue to watch the catastrophe in the Ukraine unfold on TV without getting involved,” stated a recent email from the high school.

A number of businesses and individuals are helping with the dinner. Spaghetti Lane, Barrington Butchery and Oral Surgery Services are sponsoring the event.

There will be a silent auction during the dinner. People can bid on a variety of items, including New England Patriots tickets. Other businesses that helped out include Swansea Country Club, East Bay Rowing, Synergy, Wild Birds Unlimited, Redwood Nursery, Palmer River Grille, Bluewater, Pomodoro, Town Fair Tires, Healthtrax, Massage Envy, and Leon’s. There will also be a variety of gift baskets up for bid.

Middle school donates

The Barrington Middle School community also pitched in with the Ukraine relief effort recently. The BMS Community Service Club helped organize a donation drive at the school, and more than 1,000 items were collected and later brought to the Cardi’s Furniture store in Swansea, Mass., which collected donated items and sent them to Poland for distribution to the refugees.

“The entire experience was an ideal reminder of what makes our school great and what our focus should be,” said one of the teachers at the school. “Students are empowered and staff does what it can to make it all come together.”

A special thanks went out to Anderson Motors, which donated a truck to help deliver the items to Cardi’s, as well as BMS Principal Dr. Andy Anderson and Assistant Principal Elliot LeFaiver.
