Basketball team wins 12 straight before playoffs are canceled

Team Gold — a BYBA grade 5 basketball team — was poised for a title run before the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancelation of the league playoffs.

Prior to the abrupt ending to the season, Team Gold had built an impressive 12-game winning streak. Head coach Doug Furtado said his team started the season with two straight losses, but the boys regrouped and won their next 12 games.

In fact, Team Gold had captured the number one seed in the playoffs and had reached the division semifinals when MetroWest Basketball officials decided to cancel the remainder of the season. Coach Furtado said that season was "truly epic," adding that the team members were good kids who improved throughout the year and played their hearts out every game.

"Although they didn’t get their shot at the final game, they are certainly champions in the eyes of their coaches and parents and should be very proud," Coach Furtado wrote in a recent email.

Team members were Brooks Mello, Zachary Sheinberg, Soren Hoffman, Myles Blount, Sanders Toman, Sam Tostes, Colin Appleyard, Charlie Furtado, Connor Gillam and Caleb Appleyard. Ben Appleyard served as assistant coach.
