Eagles unable to hold onto early lead against Patriots

The Barrington High School softball team allowed five runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth and lost to Portsmouth, 11-1, on Tuesday, May 7. 

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead against the Patriots in the first inning when Genny Geiser drew a walk, and later crossed the plate. 

Barrington’s 1-0 advantage lasted until the bottom of the third inning, when Portsmouth scored five runs on four hits. Barbara Rainey drove in three of those runs with a triple. The Patriots, who finished the game with 13 hits, expanded their lead to eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and scored two more in the bottom of the sixth. 

Alyssa Conaty, Ariana Renzi and Kendall Fisher each had hits for Barrington, and Aislinn McCoy drew two walks for the Eagles. Barrington finished the game with eight walks.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
