The Barrington High School debate team celebrated a strong finish to the season, winning the state championship for the fourth year in a row.
The state championship was held on Saturday, March 30 at Barrington High School with more than 100 students in attendance from a number of local high schools.
The Barrington team of Gabrielle Ellicott and Emily Gorman captured first place while Lorelei Alverson and Nina Polumbo took home second place.
Rounding out the top ten was the team of Harry Dunn and Andrew Gerstenblatt, who finished sixth, and Aryana Mohammadi and Sara Quinlan, coming in tenth.
Barrington also won four of the top five Varsity awards for individual speaker — Lorelei Alverson came in at first, Jackson Killilea in second, Nina Polumbo in third, and Gabrielle Ellicott in fifth place.
Harry Dunn, Emily Gorman, Kevin Zhu, and Aryana Mohammadi also placed in the top 25 percent of all speakers.
The team of Morgan Alverson and Martin Lapczyk came in third place in the Novice competition. Alverson and Lapczyk placed second and fifth, respectively, in the novice individual competition. Audrey Falkner also placed in the top 10 in the same competition.
Regular season finale
At its final regular season meet, Barrington won four of the top five awards for Varsity individual speaker: Students Jonny Zhang (second place), Sam Turner (third place), Ellie Wind (fourth place), and Aryana Mohammadi (fifth place).
Barrington also won the top two spots for Varsity teams: Sam Turner and Jonny Zhang came in first place while Aryana Mohammadi and Marcus Nicholson placed second. Additionally, Grace Zwolinski was the third place finisher in the Novice competition.
