Dr. Raymond G. Lundgren, age 89, passed away Monday, February 1, 2021, at his home in Tiverton. He battled Parkinson’s disease with fortitude and tenacity for 12 years, but in the end succumbed to Covid-19 on the day he was to be vaccinated.  He was the husband of Nancy (Almy) Lundgren to whom he was married for 65 years.

Born in Pawtucket, son of the late Raymond G. Sr. and Edna (Ashton) Lundgren, he was a resident of Tiverton for 58 years.

Raymond was a graduate of Pawtucket West High School.  He attended the University of Rhode Island where he was President of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He earned a Bachelor's degree from URI in 1954 as a Distinguished Military graduate with a commission in the United States Army serving in the Korean Conflict as well as and many additional years in the Army Reserves. He was awarded a Master’s degree from URI in 1959. He also earned a PhD in Environmental Physiology from the University of Missouri in 1963.

Following graduate school, he began his career at Brown University in the Institute of Life Sciences as clinical director of the Metabolic Disease laboratory. He then served as the Director of Laboratories for the RI Dept. of Health for over 30 years. Additionally Raymond was an adjunct professor at URI, served as a consultant on the Board of Safety at Pfizer and was President of ASTPLD (Lab Directors Association). After retirement, he continued to consult for the American Industrial Hygiene Association.

Committed to community service, Raymond served on the Tiverton School Board, and was appointed the first chairman of the Conservation Commission in Tiverton. He was a charter member of Save Our Community which successfully fought to keep the Oil Refinery out of town.  He was treasurer for Union Public Library, Amicable Church, and was a founding member of the Tiverton Land Trust.

Raymond was very proud of his alma mater, and was actively involved on several alumni foundation committees.  He was presented the Ram Award, the highest honor bestowed on an Alum.  He and Nancy were season ticket holders for many years as he loved his Rhody Rams!   

Ray enjoyed biking, tennis, skiing, traveling and spending time with his family and many friends.  He was passionate about his animals. He also loved gardening and earned a Master Gardener certificate then volunteering in the program.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Blair Merriman of Needham, Mass., and Colby (Timothy) Keilty of Fredericksburg, Va.; two brothers,  Ralph (Madeline) Lundgren and Robert (Linda) Lundgren; two sisters, Edna Smith and Edith Giordano; eight grandchildren,  Ryan (Baili), Todd and Andrew Merriman,  Amy (Brandon) O’Brien, Eric Ciccone, Timothy Jr., Christian and Reilly Keilty. He was the father of the late Todd Almy Lundgren and father-in-law of the late Daniel C. Merriman.

A memorial service will be held at a later date once restrictions on gatherings have been lifted.  Contributions in his memory may be made to the Raymond G. and Nancy A.
