KMS Soccer Notes: Huskies shutout Lincoln, advance to girls' state semis

Posted

The unbeaten and reigning champion Kickemuit Middle School girls' soccer squad advanced to the final four of the 2026 state championship playoffs after the Huskies defeated visiting Lincoln, 4-0, in a quarterfinal contest played on a wind-swept Wednesday evening, Oct. 21, at Veterans Field in Warren.

Second-seeded KMS and the 10th-seeded Lions played scoreless through the opening 30 minutes, based significantly on the performance of Lions' keeper Addison Dalen. The Huskies had near-complete control of possession in the first half, but Dalen made about a half-dozen saves to keep the hosts off the board.

That changed in the second half as the locals broke open the contest. Emma Overy had a brace for the Huskies, who defeated Deering-West Warwick, 8-0, in their playoff opener two nights earlier also at Vets. Mylah Borges and Gianna Faria added the other tallies. Keeper Ava Pereira recorded the shutout in the KMS net on three saves.

"We are really pleased with how hard the girls have been playing the past two playoff games," said KMS head coach Thea Brum, assisted by Krista Varrichione.

Referring to the Huskies' 10-0-0 run to the Eastern Division regular season title, Brum continued, "We know we’ve had it fairly easy during the regular season and we have expressed to the girls this is where it really counts and they have shown that they understand that and are ready for any team we play.

"We know they have what it takes to compete with these teams in playoffs and are extremely happy with the intensity and energy they are bringing post season. We are all determined to run it back this year."

The victory was the 27th in a row overall for KMS, which its record move to 12-0-0 for the fall with the win.

Of the undefeated streak, including a 15-0-0 mark en route to the 2025 title, Brum added, "We are just focused on the next game, continuing the streak and finishing another season undefeated."

In the semis, KMS will face the winner of the quarter between third-seeded Hope Highlands-Cranston and sixth-seeded Portsmouth, a game scheduled for Thursday night, Oct. 21. The Huskies will host the final four contest either Monday or Tuesday, Oct. 26 or 27, at Vets Field and at a time to be determined.
