Donna Powell named Portsmouth’s Teacher of the Year for '20-'21

She’s the guidance counselor for Melville School

PORTSMOUTH — It's been a busy week in the school district for staff recognitions.

On the heels of Hathaway School’s Ashley Adamson being named as the Rhode Island Teacher of the Year for 2021, it was time to name the district’s selection for next year as well.

In a surprise virtual announcement earlier this week, Donna Powell was informed she will be the Portsmouth Teacher of the Year for 2020-21.

Ms. Powell has been with the district for 33 years, and is currently the guidance counselor for Melville School. She has also served as an elementary teacher and interventionist.

In her nomination, one of Ms. Powell’s colleagues wrote, "Working with Donna Powell is an honor and a privilege. She is the most genuine, supportive, calming and caring human being I have ever met. Donna is the heart and soul of our school community and everyone that is lucky enough to encounter Donna is truly blessed."

Ms. Powell joins past district Teacher of the Year recipients and will be in next year's selection process for Rhode Island Teacher of the Year.
