Portsmouth High students dismissed after gas leak

‘Multiple individuals’ requested medical attention

PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth High School dismissed students at about 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday following a gas leak inside the cafeteria.

“Several PHS staff members reported smelling a gas odor in the cafeteria area this morning,” Superintendent Thomas Kenworthy stated in an e-mail to The Portsmouth Times. “Students and staff were evacuated while Portsmouth Fire and Rhode Island Energy checked the building.

“Due to the fact that multiple individuals requested medical attention and no timeframe could be given for occupancy, out of an abundance of caution we initiated an early dismissal.”

The building has since been cleared and deemed safe for occupancy by the Portsmouth Fire Department and Rhode Island Energy, the superintendent said.
