The YMCA recently honored longtime Bayside YMCA members and volunteers Gloria Hall and Ellen Collis as "Y Heroes."
At a special luncheon at the Rhode Island Convention Center, YMCA officials recognized the contributions made by Ms. Hall and Ms. Collis over the years. Ms. Hall and Ms. Collis were key supporters for the recent Bayside Family YMCA renovation project, which included the construction of a new aquatics center, locker rooms, and main lobby.
"Their unwavering support exemplifies the true spirit of the Y mission to support youth development and healthy living, and to encourage social responsibility," stated a press release from the YMCA of Greater Providence.
Throughout the Bayside Family YMCA renovation project, Gloria and Ellen were often heard saying "...this project is a gift back to the community that has given so much to us."
On June 17, 2013 Gloria and Ellen gave their gift, the new Bayside Family YMCA, back to the community that had given so much to them.
"This was a long building process that took many years of hard work and overcoming challenges in order to bring the vision to life. During that time, both Gloria and Ellen never wavered and always brought their commitment of time and treasure to the project and provided strong leadership and guidance," stated the release.
"The Bayside Family YMCA is grateful that these incredible ladies have continued to steward the mission of our Y, ensuring that generations to come will have a safe place for their families to enjoy.
"Without their leadership and dedication, this project would not be a reality today."
More than 600 people joined in the celebration, which honored individuals and corporate partners who support the Y mission of building healthy spirit, mind and body for all, through programs, services and relationships that are based on core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
Each year, the YMCA of Greater Providence celebrates outstanding individuals and corporate partners who have made a memorable impact in the community.
This year's Y Heroes are:
• Ocean State Job Lot Charitable Foundation, represented by Marc Perlman
• Michael Baker of the Newman YMCA, representing three generations of the Baker Family
• Lammis Vargas, a branch council member from the Cranston YMCA
• Gloria Hall and Ellen Collis, longtime members and philanthropists of the Bayside Family YMCA
