Vietnam veteran will be keynote speaker on Veterans Day

The Barrington United Veterans Council will be holding its annual Veterans Day ceremony at Victory Gate, Barrington High School at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11.

Major Bill Groves, US Army Vietnam veteran and vice president of the Barrington United Veterans Council, will be the master of ceremonies.

The American flag will be raised by a joint Boy Scout Color Guard from Troops 2 and 46. The National Anthem will be performed by members the BHS Chorus and Taps will be performed by BHS Trumpeter Matthew Davis. There will be a brief wreath-laying ceremony followed by the ceremonial reading of the names of the Barrington war dead by Colonel Charlie Brule, US Army Retired.

Later, a patriotic poem will be read by Ken Lass, a US Navy veteran.

The keynote speaker will be Vietnam Veteran Sgt. Frank Castellone. Sgt. Castellone served with the 107th Signal Company Rhode Island Army National Guard. His unit was activated in 1968 and sent to Vietnam where he was assigned to Base Camp Long Binh post. His accomplishments while in-country were numerous as a result he was awarded a Bronze Star.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far.
