Three Barrington High School coaches have been named Rhode Island Coach of the Year in their respective sports for the 2018-19 school year. The selections were made by the National Federation of State High School Associations.
John "Sandy" Gorham earned the distinction for BHS girls swimming, while Marvin Gordon was honored for boys tennis and Holly Morris was honored for field hockey.
Mr. Gorham led the BHS girls swim team to its fifth straight state championship this past winter. Barrington scored 298 points at the state championship meet, while North Kingstown was second with 261 points, and LaSalle was third with 240 points. Mr. Gorham also coaches the Barrington High School football team and the Eagles girls softball team.
Mr. Gordon led the Barrington High School boys tennis team to the Division I state championship in the spring. It was the Eagles' first state title since 1998. Mr. Gordon and the Eagles finished the regular season undefeated at 14-0 and defeated Wheeler in the state finals.
Mr. Gordon also had a number of his team members compete in the individual state tennis tournaments.
Ms. Morris led the Barrington High School field hockey team to the Division I state championship last fall. Ms. Morris and Barrington defeated perennial powerhouse Moses Brown 2-1 in the finals.
