Strong second half powers Eagles to 24-point victory

The Barrington High School boys basketball team rebounded from a four-point halftime deficit to defeat Mount Pleasant 70-46 on Thursday night, Dec. 15.

The Eagles stormed out to a 19-10 first quarter lead against the Kilties, paced by Nick Scandura’s eight points and two three-pointers from Sean Bonneau.

But the second quarter was all Mount Pleasant, and the Kilties carried a 27-23 advantage into the break. The Eagles could only muster four points in the second quarter — three free throws by Scandura and one free throw by Owen Pfeffer.

The second half was a different story.

Barrington dropped in 22 third-quarter points — Bonneau knocked down 3 three-pointers and a pair of free throws while Matt Leonard provided a spark off the bench with a basket and a free throw.

The Eagles led 45-31 heading into the fourth quarter and continued to pull away. Bonneau drilled two more threes; Matt Raffa added five of his 10 points in the fourth quarter; and Leonard hit two more baskets.

Bonneau finished with a game-high 25 points, while Scandura had 16 and Raffa finished with 10. Leonard, a junior, pitched in with seven points, Dan Coogan had six, and Pfeffer and Spencer Proulx rounded out the scoring with three points each.

“We learned from Tuesdays’ defeat and improved our turnovers and defensive rebounding,” said Barrington Coach Mike Raffa. “We played tougher and were more resilient.”

The Eagles improved to 1-1 in league play and 2-1 overall.

Eagles’ opener

Barrington kicked off the season with a tough 55-54 loss at Central on Tuesday night, Dec. 13. The Eagles got off to a fast start, building leads of 11-2 and 29-16, before taking a six-point advantage into halftime.

But the Knights’ offensive rebounding and full court pressure defense proved to be too much for Barrington. Central regained the lead late in the game, 53-52, but Scandura knocked down two free throws with 21 seconds left to play to give Barrington a 54-53 lead.

However, Central’s Jesus Folger hit the game-winner with seven seconds remaining.

Matt Raffa was the game’s high scorer with 24 points, and Scandura added 12.
