‘Shine a Light on Antisemitism’ this Sunday in Barrington

Candlelight vigil planned at Temple Habonim

Posted

Temple Habonim in Barrington will hold a special candlelight service/vigil on its front lawn on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 6 p.m., to "Shine a Light on Antisemitism.”

“Our goal is to stand together with our allies to shine a light on antisemitism and drive out the darkness of bigotry with the light of hope and compassion,” wrote Rabbi Howard Voss-Altman in an email to the Barrington Times.

Rabbi Howard referenced the recent incidents in the Oakland Beach section of Warwick where antisemitic flyers were left at peoples’ homes. He also spoke about swastikas written on restroom walls in Bristol Warren schools.

“At this time, the Jewish community has been besieged by public figures, celebrities, politicians, and neo-Nazis in our area who are engaging in the most virulent forms of hatred and bigotry,” he wrote.

Rabbi Howard said faith communities from all across Barrington are expected to attend Sunday’s candlelight vigil — Temple Habonim will be joined by the leadership and members of the Barrington Congregational Church, St. James Lutheran Church, St. John's Episcopal Church, and Barrington Presbyterian Church, as well as the leaders of Barrington Interfaith Partners.

The event is open to the public, and Rabbi Howard is hoping people take time to attend it.
