Question: What role should sports, clubs and other extra-curricular activities play in Barrington public schools? In your opinion, how important are those activities when balanced against academics?

• Patrick McCrann — "Extra-curricular activities are integral to our schools. Our students have many opportunities to challenge themselves academically and physically in ways that complement their classroom experience. These activities also build a deeper sense of community and school pride. While academics take precedence, the value of extra-curricular activities must not be underestimated."

• Erika Sevetson — "Extracurriculars of all kinds are incredibly important to student engagement; the wealth of options at BHS, and faculty support to make them possible, are among its greatest strengths. I support increasing clubs and activities at HMS and BMS, as these can make the difference between an 'okay' school experience and a truly rewarding one."

• Gina Bae — "Extracurriculars are necessary for student engagement and a valued component of a child’s education. It would be important to develop strong partnerships with teachers, PTOs, and private institutions that help to provide these programs to enhance and enrich a student’s learning experience and aid in providing a well-rounded education."

• John Alessandro — "All play a large role in making up a complete student experience at Barrington Public Schools. I think extracurricular activities complement academics and can be used to improve classroom performance. Barrington should be proud that we offer so many activities to our students and praise the facility and community who support them."

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
