Police: Man warns store clerk, then steals item from store
Officers track down suspect about a block away
Barrington police received a call from an employee at Brickyard Wine and Spirits on Monday, Aug. 10, after a man walked into the store and told the clerk that he was going to take a bottle of alcohol and leave without paying for it.
The man did just that, the clerk told police. She snapped a photo of the individual before he exited the store.
Police responded to the business, reviewed the photo and then scoured the area looking for the man. Officers located the man, Alexander R. Wheaton, 30, of Taunton, Mass., behind the old BP gas station building.
Police said the man was sweating profusely and had apparently downed the bottle of vodka very quickly. Police charged Mr. Wheaton with larceny under $1,500. EMTs transported the man to a hospital.
