Dec. 6 party will celebrate East Bay Homebrew Club's champion beer

Posted

Beer drinkers across the country will soon have the opportunity to enjoy a unique beer first brewed inside a Barrington resident's garage.

New England Breakfast Ale, a brown ale brewed with maple syrup and locally-roasted coffee, will be canned and distributed nationally as part of the prize for winning the 2019 National Homebrew Contest "The Boil Rumble." The beer was the creation of the East Bay Homebrew Club, which meets regularly at Brickyard Wine and Spirits in Barrington.

On Friday, Dec. 6, members of the local homebrew club, including club president Stephen Amaral, will attend the official release party — it will be held at Malted Barley in Providence, from 7 to 10 p.m.

“This 5.4 ABV (alcohol by volume) beer is perfect for the upcoming winter months, great for enjoying at breakfast, after midnight or any time of day," said Mr. Amaral. "This is a huge deal for us as a homebrew club and our first major win. We look forward to celebrating with our team and friends and family and Melvin in December."

More than 80 homebrewing clubs nationwide submitted entries to the first annual Boil Rumble, which was co-sponsored by Melvin Brewing, MoreBeer!.com Homebrewing Supplies and the Brewing Network.

The entries were judged by a panel of professionals, and six finalists — including East Bay's New England Breakfast Ale — were chosen. Melvin Brewing agreed to brew those finalists on their professional system and distributed in cans in each club’s home state.

The national champion, however, will be distributed to more than a dozen states across the U.S. The East Bay Homebrew Club also won a Low Rider Digital Electric BrewScultpure system valued at $6,000, a live interview on The Brewing Network’s “Session” podcast and an entry in the Pro-Am Competition at the Great American Beer Festival.

Members of the East Bay Homebrew Club are Brian Buongiovanni, Charles Lavendier, Chuck Croteau, Mr. Amaral, Chris Darling, Josh Bublitz, Mike Seward, Matt Blood and Mark McMahon.

Mr. Buongiovanni formed the club in 2012. It is open to all local residents, including people who have never brewed before.

Mr. Amaral was a driving force behind creating a beer to enter in the national competition. In addition to registering the club for the contest, the club also used Mr. Amaral's setup to brew the championship ale.

Other finalists

The runner-up in the Boil Rumble was Pinky Ring, a red rye IPA from Aurora City Brew Club in Colorado. A small run of this beer was made at Melvin Brewing in Alpine, Wyo., and canned exclusively for the Colorado market. The beer sold out within two days and a party was thrown with the homebrew club at Lowry Beer Garden in Denver, Colo.

The third-place winner, Viking Luau, is an experimental pale ale from the Merrimack Valley Homebrew Club in Lowell, Mass., and will be canned and distributed throughout Massachusetts starting in December, with a release party Saturday, Dec. 7 in Newburyport, Mass. at The Keep, from 7 to 10 p.m. Dubbed a “Nordic Pale, this beer was modeled after a hazy pale ale, but fermented with Kveik yeast from Norway.
