The Barrington High School boys basketball team treated a capacity crowd to a double-digit victory over Bishop Hendricken, 53-41, on Friday night, Jan. 26.

The Eagles, playing in front of an amped-up home crowd, improved to 14-1 overall and 10-1 in Division I standings.

“The students came out early, packed the bleachers, were loud, provided the team great energy and created their own ‘white out,’” BHS Coach Mike Raffa wrote in an email to the Barrington Times. “Also, there were so many members of the community in attendance, including teachers, administrators, friends, family and alumni that spanned three generations.”

Colin McDermott's three point field goal midway through the first quarter gave Barrington a 5-4 advantage — a lead the Eagles never relinquished.

The home team netted four three-pointers in the opening eight minutes, including Matt Raffa's fall away buzzer beater that extended the lead to 16-9 after the first quarter.

Owen Pfeffer threaded a pass to Evan Anderson who scored with two seconds remaining in the second quarter to provide the Eagles momentum and a 29-22 lead heading into halftime. Anderson scored eight of his ten points in the second period.

Barrington opened the second half with a 7-1 run, thanks to a layup by Nick Scandura, a deep transition three pointer by Raffa and a six-foot bank shot by Quinn Murphy to extend the advantage to 36-23.

The Hawks fought their way back into the contest and trailed 38-32, with less than eight minutes left. However, with one second left on the shot clock and the Eagles taking the ball out of bounds Pfeffer found Scandura for a lay-up. The basket squashed the Hawks’ rally.

A few minutes later Murphy knocked down a three-pointer from the right wing to extend the lead to 47-36. With 53 seconds remaining Raffa took a pass from Scandura, raced up the court and completed a conventional three point play, which provided Barrington with its largest lead of the night at 53-38.

When the final buzzer sounded, the BHS student-section rushed onto the floor to congratulate the home team.

Pfeffer played well on both ends of the floor and finished with five points, 11 assists and solid defense. Murphy also scored five points, and continues to be known as the team’s defensive stopper.

Scandura scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Raffa scored eight of his game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter.

McDermott, Jake Ignall, Ryan Rigamonti and Matt Leonard provided valuable minutes off the bench.

The Eagles were schedule to host Cranston East on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m., and will travel to Portsmouth on Thursday for a 6 p.m. tip.
