There is a new sign at the Osamequin Nature Preserve in Barrington detailing the origins of the land and the indigenous people who settled it.
The sign is titled “Osamequin, Great Leader of the Pokanokets” and is filled with information and images, including one of Pokanoket Sagamore Dr. William “Winds of Thunder” Guy and Sachem Tracey “Dancing Star” Brown, who are Barrington residents.
Guy and Brown were present during a recent ceremony marking the installation of the sign.
The marker is one in a series placed by the Sowams Heritage Area Project that includes markers at the Congregational Church in Bristol, Burr's Hill Park and Kickemuit Middle School in Warren, and the Newman Church in East Providence.
Each marker describes aspects of the area known in the 17th century as Sowams and inhabited by members of the Pokanoket Tribe headed by the Massasoit Osamequin.
Karen Dionne designed the marker, which was approved by the Friends of the Pokanoket Tribe. Todd Blount sponsored the sign. It was manufactured by Fossil Graphics, Inc. on Long Island.
In Nov. 2022, the Barrington Town Council approved the placement of the marker.
