A movie written by Barrington native Eirene Tran Donohue celebrated its global release this month. “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” was released on Netflix on Friday, April 21.

“We just had our Hollywood premiere on Thursday and my mom flew out for it which was amazing,” Donohue wrote in a recent email to the Barrington Times. “I’m actually currently in Vietnam doing press for it. We are doing a private screening for the US ambassador and some Vietnamese government officials tomorrow and then later we have a red carpet screening in Saigon.”

The movie stars Rachael Leigh Cook and is set in Vietnam. Donohue said the inspiration for the movie was based party on how she met her husband while backpacking in Vietnam.

“It’s about a travel executive who goes to Vietnam after an unexpected break up and falls in love with her Vietnamese tour guide,” Donohue wrote.

Donohue grew up in Barrington and graduated from Barrington High School. She has written numerous screenplays that have been produced and filmed by multiple outlets, including Lionsgate, ABC Studios, Freeform, Disney, Netflix, Lifetime, and Hallmark.

Her most recent projects include “12 Days of Christmas Eve” which stars Kelsey Grammar, “A Christmas Spark” which stars Jane Seymour, and “A Tourist’s Guide to Love.” Donohue’s film “A Sugar and Spice Holiday,” for Lifetime, was one of the first holiday-themed cable movies to feature a predominantly Asian cast.

Donohue is currently developing her autobiographical script about motherhood titled “Time Out” with Lucy Liu, who is attached to direct and produce the film.
