There are new traffic light poles at the intersection of the East Bay Bike Path and Sowams Road.
The poles were put in late last month and serve as a warning to motorists to slow down as they cross the bike path lane at Sowams Road. The work was completed in a short period of time and the lights were seen cautioning drivers recently.
Officials are hoping the lights will improve pedestrian safety at the Sowams Road intersection. There have been a number of accidents and even more close calls at the intersection of New Meadow Road and the bike path, which is located a short ride to the west.
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation built the East Bay Bike Path, starting in 1987 and finishing the work in 1992. It covers 14.5 miles and runs from India Point Park in Providence to Independence Park in Bristol.
