A special rally/protest is planned for Saturday, Aug. 29 in town.

Organizers are calling for people to line up along County Road in two locations at 2:30 p.m. One group will line County near the intersection with Federal Road, while the other group will line the road near Police Cove. At 3 p.m., the two groups will begin marching from their locations toward Barrington Town Hall. When the groups arrive at the town hall, there will be speakers, music and poetry.

The list of confirmed speakers includes Jessica Garcia, Reverend David Nunez, Rabbi Howard Voss-Altman, Brother Gary of Black Lives Matter RI, Mel Bynum, the founder of East Bay for Diversity, Katherine Quinn, and Barrington Town Council member Jacob Brier.

Organizers for the event also recently shared a list of objectives:

"1. Within 30 days, we would like to see the Barrington School Department establish a diversity committee to look at adding native/black history/anti-racism education to the curriculum.

"2. We would also like the school to address bullying as result of racism and look into diverse hiring practices.

"3. We would like to see the Barrington Community develop a committee and collaborate with town hall to develop multi-cultural events in our town and address racism in the community.

"4. We will be requesting that the town raise a Black Lives Matter flag in Barrington to promote Black Lives and history for initially 30 days. In addition, we will request that the flag is raised for Black History Month in February and June 19th annually.

"5. We would like the Barrington Police Department to offer further education on diversity training and implicit bias training."

Saturday's protest in town is being planned by Jessica L. Garcia, Elizabeth Torres, Mel Bynum and Polly Mitchell.
