Luis pitches perfect game as Tiverton tops Barrington 2-0

The Tiverton softball 12U all-stars edged Barrington 2-0 in a District 2 game on Thursday night. Tiverton’s Liliana Luis pitched a perfect game, striking out 15 and allowing 0 hits and 0 walks.

“Lily threw an incredible game,” said Tiverton head coach Mike Martin. “She’s always been a hard thrower, but her consistency has improved immensely from last season. She also opened the door for the offense on that big hit to left center field.”

Luis was the third pitcher on a strong Tiverton team that won both the district and state championships last season before falling at regionals in Bristol, CT.

Barrington pitcher Ava Lucas was nearly as good, striking out 15, allowing just 3 hits, 2 walks and 2 runs.

Both pitchers were breezing through the lineups until the top of the fifth inning. Luis led off and belted a double to the left centerfield gap. Barrington outfielders Sarah Clegg and Layla Kupperman retrieved the ball at the fence, but Luis stood on second with a stand up double. She stole third base on the next pitch by Lucas and scored on a bloop base hit by Autumn Gerlach to give Tiverton a 1-0 lead. Gerlach took second on the throw home, stole third base and came home on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 2-0.

A riled Lucas walked Megan Martin, but struck out the next hitter, Kristina DeCotis, though she reached base when catcher Carly Gill dropped the ball.

Gill found the ball and threw late to first baseman Audrey Paxton.

Martin took third base on the play and started for home plate. Paxton saw it and hurled the ball to Gill who had plenty of time to set her self and tag out Martin for the first out of the inning.

During the play, DeCotis stole second base and attempted to steal third when Gill threw the ball back to Lucas on the mound.

Lucas threw to third baseman Grace Fontaine, the ball tipped off her glove and DeCotis took off for home. Fontaine recovered and threw the ball to the plate to Gill, who stood firm and tagged out DeCotis for the second out of the inning.

Lucas then struck out Teagan Nevitt to end the inning.

Barrington hitters in an attempt to rankle Luis, began to show bunt. But Luis, who struck out the side in the third and fourth innings, kept throwing heat, striking out four of the last six batters she faced to preserve the win.
