Letter: Solar tour in Barrington is Sunday, Oct. 2

To the editor:

The Barrington Energy Committee is working with the town to track energy usage and reduce energy consumption in its schools and municipal buildings.

Additionally, the Committee has been seeking opportunities to increase the town’s resilience and reduce its carbon footprint through renewable energy. In 2016 we led the successful Solarize Barrington campaign, which enabled residents to obtain solar photovoltaic (pv) systems at a discounted price.

To celebrate that success, and allow residents the opportunity to see residential solar installations up close and ask questions, we are hosting a self-guided tour on Oct. 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. The tour begins at St. Luke’s Church on Washington Road, where participants will be given a map and additional information.

Four homeowners (all a short walk from St. Luke’s) have graciously agreed to participate. Solar installers and other experts will also be available to answer questions.

As a result of the Solarize Barrington campaign, 275 kW of solar pv capacity was installed in Barrington. That’s enough to power nearly 36 average homes for a year. That equates to reducing CO2 output by 212 tons every year or taking 26 cars off the road.

The Barrington Energy Committee is excited to help continue these successes in our community, and we hope our neighbors will join us on Oct. 2.
