Letter: Schools’ DEI policy is some scary stuff

Posted

To the editor:

The Barrington School Department’s Office of the Superintendent distributed an email on 5/14 with the reference “School Committee Briefs: BPS School Committee Meeting 5/6/21. In it there is a Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity (DEI) Policy document that shows the radical nature of our School Committee. Their DEI policy is far out of step politically even with the present liberal Barrington electorate.

This is scary stuff. The creation of policies like this DEI policy is a solution in search of a problem in the BPS system. As a former student and now a parent of students I have always found the vast majority of people who work in our school system to be outstanding educators and administrators who try to help students from all backgrounds. The DEI policy is nothing less than a transparent political indoctrination attempt and I suggest we not only keep politics off the pole but out of the schools as well!

For example, one bullet point in the document states “We believe the most effective way to tackle issues of privilege and systemic bias is to name them, talk about them, and take personal and collective responsibility to change them”. I encourage everyone to read this DEI document so they can realize how the town they live in is quickly morphing into the People’s Republic of Barrington.
