Herbert B. "Skip" Barlow Jr., 94, formerly of Providence and Barrington, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2020 in Annapolis, Md. He was the loving husband of the late Margaret Barlow, to whom he was married for 45 years. He is survived by his children, Bruce (Bette) and Nancy (Jud) and four grandchildren, Alex, Danielle, Emma and David.

Born in Providence in 1925, he was the son of the late Herbert B. Barlow and Dorothy Moorse Barlow. He graduated from Moses Brown High School and attended Brown University, where he was part of NROTC and commodore of the sailing team. After graduating from Brown as an ensign in the Navy, he toured the Pacific in 1945 on a troop transport. He then served in the Naval Reserve for 23 years, retiring as a lieutenant commander.

After active duty, Skip attended Catholic University Law School in Washington, D.C. and worked in the U.S. Patent Office and the Navy Department. Upon graduating from law school, he returned to Rhode Island and joined his father’s patent law firm, Barlow & Barlow, now known as Barlow, Josephs & Holmes, Ltd. He was active in the intellectual property section of the ABA, chairing the trademark committee. He was also heavily involved with the Brown University radio station WBRU and the State Ballet of RI.

Skip was a dedicated sailor, who competed in 18 Newport-Bermuda races, navigating once to first place overall. Retiring to Hobe Sound, Fla., he and his wife actively cruised the Caribbean and Florida Keys.

He was active in the Cruising Club of America since 1958. A member of the Florida Station, he served on several committees and was later nominated to Rear Commodore. Skip was an Elder of the Presbyterian Church in Hobe Sound, Fla.

Service and burial will be private, In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brown University Sailing team.
