Victory Field issues surface — lights out, no scoreboard

Some of the lights were not working.

The scoreboard was out.

And the concession stand ran out of food, but at least the home team won.

The Barrington High School football team rolled to a 21-6 victory over Middletown in an Injury Fund game at Victory Field on Thursday night, Aug. 31. Mt. Hope defeated Tiverton in the Injury Fund opener at host BHS, and Rogers High School edged Portsmouth in the middle game.

Barrington took the field for the final game of the evening and wasted no time scoring.

AJ DiOrio caught the opening kick-off at his own 10-yard line and sprinted through the Islanders’ defense for a 90-yard touchdown.

The Eagles’ defense was the next group to shine. Barrington pinned the Islanders deep in their own end and dropped Middletown ball carriers for losses on two straight plays.

On first down, Barrington’s Matt Zimmerman, Graham Bennett, DiOrio and Ben McClelland combined to crush the Islanders’ running back for a one-yard loss. On second down, the Islanders tried a wide receiver screen, but the Eagles’ Chucky Potter, Alex McClelland and others tackled the Middletown player before he could get back to the line of scrimmage.

Barrington forced the Islanders to punt and took over possession near midfield. That Eagles’ drive came up short, but at the start of the second quarter Barrington was back in the end zone.

The Eagles’ offense leaned on strong runs by DiOrio and Mitchell Ivatts to gash the Islanders. On third and 10, Ivatts carried for a key first down to the Middletown five-yard line, and one play later the senior barreled into the end zone for a touchdown.

Barrington’s 14-0 lead was cut to eight a few minutes later when the Islanders scored on a long pass play, but the Eagles’ offense responded a short time later.

The Barrington possession started near mid-field after the Islanders kicked off the ball short. Again, Barrington’s offense looked to the ground game — DiOrio sprinted for an eight-yard gain on first down and two plays later Ivatts followed blockers around the left side of the line for a long touchdown run.

The Eagles’ defense kept Middletown out of the end zone through the rest of the second quarter.

Barrington will travel to Burrillville on Saturday, Sept. 9 for the season-opener. The game kicks off at 2:30 p.m.
