Barrington police are investigating an accident that occurred on Monday afternoon on New Meadow Road involving two people in their 80s.

Barrington Police Chief Dino DeCrescenzo said an 82-year-old woman from Rumford was driving on New Meadow Road at about 2:30 p.m. when her vehicle struck an 83-year-old man who was riding his bicycle. The elderly man slammed into the car's windshield and lost consciousness, Chief DeCrescenzo said. The bicyclist, a Barrington resident, was not wearing a helmet.

Police are still piecing together some of the details surrounding the accident. Chief DeCrescenzo said the woman driving the car offered a different account of the accident than a witness at the scene — it is not entirely clear whether the bicyclist was pedaling along New Meadow Road or if he had just pulled onto that road from Oak Manor.

Chief DeCrescenzo said the bicyclist suffered head injuries and was not able to provide details about the accident. He was transported to a hospital.

The chief said the accident occurred at about the same time as dismissal at Hampden Meadows School. He said vehicles were parked along the side of New Meadow Road, as parents waited to pull ahead and pick up their children.
