The Barrington High School baseball team celebrated its first league win in dramatic fashion last week.
The Eagles battled back from a one-run deficit against Tiverton, scoring two runs in the seventh inning and winning the game 6-5.
The Tigers took a lead in the top of the first inning, but Barrington exploded for four runs in the bottom of the inning. Gabe Tanous, Grant Culton, Matt Davis and Eli Terrell each had extra base hits. The highlight came off Terrell’s bat. The senior cleanup hitter crushed a pitch deep into left-centerfield that one-hopped into the County Road fence. Terrell sprinted all the way to third on the hit.
Barrington’s offensive explosion petered out a bit through the middle innings and Tiverton was eventually able to take a lead into the last inning.
With one out in the seventh, Culton flared a hit into the outfield and stretched it into a double with some heads-up base-running. Culton reached third and scored on a single by Davis.
Coach Vin Scandura had Finlay Thomson pinch-run for Davis and the move paid off as the junior stole second, and reached third on an overthrow.
With two outs, Trevor Snow delivered with a clutch hit, scoring Thomson and giving Barrington its first win in Division II this season.
Barrington’s win came against Tiverton’s top pitcher, Jason Potvin. The senior hurler has already tallied a no-hitter this season.
“That kid is an ace,” Scandura said. “He struck out 14. As soon as he got his curveball going he was tough. Anytime you can beat another team’s ace is good.”
Davis got the win on the mound for Barrington. He pitched two innings while Jack Lawson went four and Ben Nowinski went one.
Eagles top Townies
Barrington improved its league record after defeating East Providence 3-2 on Tuesday, April 18.
Davis capped an impressive offensive performance with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning to drive in the game-winning run. The senior went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI.
Tanous got the win on the mound. The junior pitched four scoreless innings and gave up just one hit.
Eagles outscore Knights
The Eagles also knocked off Central High School 6-1 in a non-league game last Wednesday, April 12. Tanous and Teddy Coon shared pitching duties. Tanous went three innings and struck out three batters, while Coon pitched four scoreless innings. The junior threw just 43 pitches in his four innings of work.
Davis led the Eagles with three hits, while Terrell and Snow each had two hits. Snow ripped a two-run inside-the-park home run.
Barrington is 2-3 in Division II and 3-3 overall.
The Eagles were scheduled to play at Ponaganset on Thursday and at home against Westerly on Saturday.
