Eagles rally to defeat Falcons in D-II volleyball showdown

Barrington boys aim to clinch top seed in playoffs

Last week was a big week for BHS volleyball. The Eagles faced off against two tough opponents and defeated both of them.

On Tuesday, May 16, Barrington knocked off Westerly 3-1, and on Thursday, May 18, the Eagles defeated Cranston West, 3-2.

“The results of our matches last week were integral to our chances to become Division Champs this season,” said Barrington Coach Christian Lambert.

After a first set loss to Westerly on Tuesday, the Eagles pulled it together to finish in four: 15-25, 25-23, 25-10, 25-19.

Max Oberacker came up big for the Eagles with nine kills, five blocks, and Luke Van Ness led the defense with 21 digs and three aces.

“With that box checked off we had to prepare for the Cranston West match on Thursday,” Lambert said, “a match that would determine the number one seed going into the playoffs. We traveled to Cranston West’s Falcons Nest … with the mind-set that the Falcons had everything to lose and we had everything to gain.”

West came out strong and Barrington did everything it could do to keep pace. The first set went to CW, 22-25, but the Eagles had a late surge in set one giving them confidence going into set 2. The Eagles posted victories in sets 2 and 3 with 25-20 and 25-18 wins. However, the team had another challenge to face going into set 4.

Cam Kelley suffered an ankle injury towards the last points of set 3. The Eagles dropped set 4, 16-25 and the drama kept building.

In the fifth set, Barrington won the coin toss. The action was back and forth early, but after two attacking errors by the Falcons the Eagles served their way to 14-10 and finished with a booming back-row attack from Maddox Godwin.

Godwin led the way with 17 kills and 13 digs. SangMin Park went over 1,000 assists for his career, tallying 46 that night. James Ciummo added five kills and four blocks.

“The number one seed is right there for us to take,” Lambert said.

Barrington needs to win against Pilgrim or East Providence to clinch number one. The Eagles can also win the regular season division if they beat both Pilgrim and EP.
