Eagles beat Kilties in quarterfinals, prepare for semis

Barrington will host St. Raphael’s this Friday night

The Barrington High School football team scored three touchdowns in the first seven minutes and rolled to a 43-8 victory over Mt. Pleasant in a Division II quarterfinal playoff game on Friday, Nov. 3.

The Eagles will play against St. Raphael’s Academy in a semifinal showdown this Friday night at Barrington High School. Kickoff is set for 6:15 p.m.

Against Mt. Pleasant, Barrington received the opening kickoff and scored less than two minutes later. AJ DiOrio took an option pitch from Alex McClelland and sprinted around the right side for a 61 yard touchdown run. DiOrio broke one tackle near the line of scrimmage and leaped over another defender en route to the score.

The Eagles converted a two-point try and led 8-0 with 10:22 to play in the first quarter.

Barrington pinned the Kilties deep in their own end on the ensuing kickoff. Mt. Pleasant tried to move the ball through the air, but Barrington’s Mitchell Ivatts grabbed the errant throw and ran it back to the seven yard line. A short time later DiOrio bullied his way into the end zone, giving the Eagles a 15-0 lead with 9:20 still to play in the first quarter.

DiOrio also made a key stop on defense. During the Kilties’ second possession, DiOrio sprinted into the backfield and wrapped up the quarterback, who then lofted a pass into the air. Ivatts hauled in his second interception and gave Barrington the ball at the Mt. Pleasant 40 yard line.

A few plays later, McClelland called his own number and charged through the Kilties’ defense for his first touchdown run of the night.

The Eagles’ defense continued to frustrate the Kilties. Barrington’s Will DiGiacomo and Trevor Snow came up with key stops, and on fourth and seven Ivatts tallied his third interception of the night.

Barrington’s offense made Mt. Pleasant pay for the mistake. The Eagles drove the ball down the field and McClelland capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown run.

With 10 minutes still to play in the first half, Barrington led 29-0.

The Kilties eventually scored, but Barrington responded with another touchdown. It was McClelland’s third TD of the game — the Eagles’ senior quarterback broke free on an 11-yard run and carried defenders into the end zone. Barrington led 35-8 at halftime.

Both teams failed to score in the third quarter, and Mt. Pleasant was driving late in the fourth when the Eagles’ Blake Dolan jumped in front of a Kilties receiver and intercepted the pass.

Barrington’s offense took over at their own seven yard line. One play later DiOrio took a pitch from McClelland and burst through the Mt. Pleasant defense for a 93-yard touchdown. Ivatts ran in the extra point try.

St. Raphael’s defeated South Kingstown 26-8 in a D-II quarterfinal game. The Saints finished 4-2 in Division II-A — their only losses came against Cumberland (21-8) and East Providence (19-0).
